BUILD GREEN - Product Data
WHAT ARE SIPS?
SIPS Building System Design and Construction Appropriate thermal insulation is the single most important factor that influences the energy performance of buildings.
The two main component parts of a SIP panel are
-
Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS) and
-
MgO - a very high quality tested and approved MgO board that has been specifically designed to offer superior structural strength and flexion, thus making it an ideal building material.

A SIP panel is manufactured by precision laminating a sheet of MgO either side of an EPS foam core. This creates an Extremely strong and versatile composite panel that can be used for many different applications. MgO is the structural component and EPS foam is the insulating component of the panel. MgO is available in different thicknesses and dimensions for varying applications and the density of EPS foam can also be altered to increase or decrease R-Value so as to suit any application, be it a regular residential house or a cold storage facility.
-
SIPS panels are available in
-
4’ x 8’ (1220mm x 2440mm),
-
4’ x 9’ (1220mm x 2745mm),
-
4’ x 10’ (1220 x 2050mm).
-
Thicknesses of the panels vary from 2” (50mm) – 12.25” (312mm).
The thickness of the panel specified depends on application and desired thermal efficiency or R-Value. SIPS panels can be used for walls, floors, ceilings, roofs and retaining/basement walls and can be cut into any shape or size.
BENEFITS OF SIPS

Structural Insulated Panels possess many advantages over traditional construction techniques and building materials. SIPS are quick and easy to erect and can be delivered at extremely competitive price points. In addition to these benefits, SIPS also have the following key advantages:
-
100% resistant to rot and mold. MgO does not feed mildew, even after consistent and prolonged exposure to wet and/or damp conditions.
-
Extremely resistant to both fresh and salt water, yet still allows a building to ‘breathe’. This makes the product ideal for use in harsh coastal and humid environments.
-
Termite resistant. MgO is completely resistant to any type of wood boring insect, such as termites, wood eating beetles, including but not limited to Common Furniture Beetles, the Waney Edge Borer, Ambrosia Beetles, Deathwatch Beetles, Wood Boring Weevils, Powder Post Beetles, House Longhorn Beetles and Forest Longhorns. MgO contains zero foodstuff for these insects.
-
Super thermally efficient structures with excellent R-Values up to R 55. This results in massive heating/cooling related energy savings of up to 80%.
-
Environment and people friendly. MgO possess no chemicals, VOC’s, formaldehyde, toxins, asbestos, crystalline silica that are detrimental to human health and is rated as “Zero Off-Gassing”.
-
MgO is non-combustible and is 100% resistant to fire. It is rated as having zero flame spread and zero smoke developed.
-
Hurricane/tornado resistant: SIPS are rated to withstand wind speeds in excess of 170 mph (274 km/h).
-
Earthquake resistant: SIPS fare extremely well in seismic events. Speed on site: Construction time on site is reduced by more than half, often 50% – 70% faster than traditional construction methods.
-
Extremely versatile: SIPS can be incorporated into existing structures, residential or commercial, new build, concrete or steel framed buildings, warehouse, schools, hospitals and office buildings.
-
Fabrication Services: Customers are given the option to take advantage of BlackStar's fabrication services, where panels are cut and finished in our factory, further reducing time on site and eliminating costly mistakes associated with incorrect cuts on site. Construction becomes more of an assembly exercise than a true construction one.
